Roots of Silence — handmade gelatin silver print
The gelatin silver print Roots of Silence is an intimate analog photograph of a forest tree, handcrafted using the classic silver gelatin technique in the darkroom. This is print 1/10 from the limited edition — the first impression in the series, with the youthful tonal depth that only freshly prepared chemistry can give.
About the photograph
The composition focuses on a strong, grounded tree trunk whose roots delve into the earth yet emerge again, bearing witness to nature’s vitality and resilience. In this black-and-white scene, the accentuated contrast between the dark, textured roots in the foreground and the soft, misty light piercing through the canopy in the background creates a deep, meditative atmosphere.
The artwork conveys a sense of quiet strength and groundedness, inviting the viewer to find peace in the solidity of the natural world. This is not a photograph of a tree; it is a portrait of permanence.
The silver gelatin process
The gelatin silver print is made by hand in the darkroom using the classic process — exposure under the enlarger, development in chemical baths, fixing, thorough washing and careful drying. Each print is unique; no two are ever entirely identical, which is precisely the appeal of analog work.
Hand-developed silver gelatin prints have a rich tonal range, deep blacks and archival permanence that digital printing cannot match. With proper storage, such a print can last more than a hundred years.
Shipping and framing
The gelatin silver print arrives carefully packaged, ready for framing. The frame is not included so you can choose one that best suits the space where the photograph will live. Acid-free framing with UV-protective glass is recommended for maximum longevity.
A certificate of authenticity is provided with every print.
