Mechanism (Gears of Time) — black and white macro photography

Black and white macro photography Mechanism is a powerful commentary on the passage of time, labor, and human existence within the machinery of the world. Handmade as a gelatin silver print in the darkroom, this work transforms industrial waste into noble art.

About the photograph

The rough texture of rust and worn gears reflects not only the material lifespan of a machine, but also the emotional weight of uniformity. Black and white macro photography here is not a stylistic choice — it is the only way to give metal the gravity it deserves.

An echo of Modern Times

The photograph evokes the spirit of Charlie Chaplin’s masterpiece Modern Times, where man is reduced to a cog in an inevitable machine. This work explores the conflict between the human soul and rigid, unstoppable systems. Its power lies in contrast: the delicacy of analog film set against the brutality of metal.

Gears were designed to serve — to turn, to transmit force, to execute. And then, one day, they stop. This black and white macro photography captures exactly that moment — when the gear no longer works, but still remembers every revolution.

The analog process

Shot on black-and-white film, focusing on the finest details of rust and damage. Studio lighting (Godox) was used to emphasise the sculptural character of the metal, making the print almost tactile.

Each print is a unique work created in the darkroom, where toning and contrast are controlled entirely by hand. The Gelatin Silver Print technique gives these gears a depth and “timeworn” luminosity that perfectly suits the subject.

Shipping and framing

The print arrives carefully packaged, mounted with mat, ready for framing. The frame is not included so you can choose one that best suits the space. Acid-free framing with UV-protective glass is recommended.

A certificate of authenticity is provided with every print.

SILVER GELATIN PRINT

The photograph is handcrafted in a traditional darkroom, hand-exposed and developed on premium Ilford Multigrade Fiber-Based (FB) or RC paper. Using classic silver halide chemistry, this authentic analog process guarantees exquisite tonal gradations, deep archival blacks, and a museum-grade lifespan of over 100 years.

MUSEUM MATBOARD

Each artwork is hand-mounted in an acid-free museum matboard in an off-white shade. With a precise 45° bevel cut, the matboard isolates the photograph from the glass, creates a captivating gallery depth, and protects it for generations.

03 /

BACKING BOARD

The back of the artwork is secured with a rigid, pH-neutral barrier board. This backing prevents the cotton paper from rippling and warping over the years, ensuring the print remains perfectly flat within its frame.
